Geyen Group: Green is Clean

by Alison Lueders, Great Green Editing

This is the third in our series about local companies that have achieved the City of Tampa’s Green Business Designation. This week we highlight Geyen Group, which provides professional cleaning of carpet, upholstery, and fabric panels to commercial buildings only. The company has been in Tampa since 2004, and received their designation in 2011.

Geyen Group

What they do

While there are many commercial cleaning businesses out there, Geyen Group specializes in “cleaning green.” This means:

  • Cleaning with products that are certified by the US EPA and carry the “Design for the Environment” label.
  • Using a low-moisture cleaning method that requires less water. It also allows the office space to dry more quickly, and actually extends the life of the carpet and fabrics cleaned.
  • Specially training the staff on the proper use of the products, equipment, and cleaning procedures. Geyen Group has a certified LEED-AP person on staff to guide the green cleaning program.

Results

While green cleaning may not be top-of-mind for some companies, Geyen Group makes you re-think your priorities. Green cleaning results in:

  • Significant cost savings for the client by extending the life of the carpet. Carpeting is one of the largest asset purchases a client makes. Depending on the size of the commercial space, this may entail thousands of dollars in savings.
  • Improved appearance.  Carpet and fabrics that are clean and well-cared for create a good impression with customers and employees, and demonstrate the care you take in your business overall.
  • Better health. A clean environment isn’t just pretty, it’s healthier too. As we muddle through the current cold and flu season, it pays to remember that regular cleaning keeps dust, dirt, pollen, mold, viruses and germs at bay.

 Looking Ahead

As Geyen Group heads towards their 10th year here, their big news includes:

  • Recently moving to a new location at 1708 West Cypress Street that is closer to downtown Tampa. This location saves employees time and gas money to get to and from work. It is also closer to many of their commercial accounts, which further saves fuel expenses and cuts greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Hosting events at the new location. According to Marleen Geyen, President of the company, “This new location is a great space for networking events.” She is speaking to artists to organize an art show for later this spring.

As is often the case, a seemingly unremarkable business may in fact be leading the way on sustainable practices. Not only has Geyen Group embraced sustainability, but they envision their business as a hub for the local community in ways that “traditional” businesses may not. Here’s hoping that Geyen Group events help get the “green” word out to every corner of Tampa Bay.
